How an insulation firm tripled its turnover in four years
An insulation firm in the Utrecht region turned work away for years, not for lack of jobs but for lack of working capital. Payment terms of three to four months made pre-funding impossible. Factoring from SOOF Finance took that brake off, and turnover tripled in four years.
The situation
Plenty of work, money too late
The owner started his insulation business fifteen years ago with two men and a van. The craft was sound, the clients were happy, and the jobs kept coming in. Yet for years the growth failed to arrive, and the reason was not on the shop floor. That pattern is typical of construction and infrastructure, where costs run ahead of income.
"We had the people, we had the knowledge, and we had the demand," he says. "What we did not have was the room to say yes to the big jobs. A fifty thousand euro contract meant I had to advance materials and wages first, and then wait three to four months for my money. In construction that is not the exception, that is the norm."
The result: every year he let jobs go that fitted the business perfectly. He could handle them easily. It was just that the liquidity would not allow it. "That is the frustrating part. You say no to work you know you would do well, purely because you cannot pre-fund it."
The approach
The bank kept the door shut
The obvious route was a dead end. "At the bank I got nowhere. And even if they had been willing, a process like that takes weeks. By then the job has long gone to someone else."
A fellow business owner pointed him towards factoring. The principle was new to him, and that made him cautious at first. "There are plenty of providers, all with different terms. I did not know where to start."
When he contacted SOOF Finance about factoring, someone was sitting at his table within a day. "No sales pitch. Someone who knew construction and grasped straight away where my money was stuck. We looked together at which form suited my situation."
How it works
The answer was traditional factoring on the full receivables book. He submits his invoice, SOOF pays out a large part of it straight away, and his client pays SOOF later on their own term. The remainder follows once the payment comes in.
The difference with a bank loan is in how it grows. "My funding line is not a fixed ceiling. It scales with my turnover. If I take on a bigger job, the headroom simply grows with it, without my having to go back and renegotiate."
Part of his security was still pledged to the bank. SOOF took over that position and coordinated the process, so that he did not end up in the middle of it.

What others say
Through working with SOOF, we are strong in more than just foundation work.
The onboarding was well organised. A simple process with fast payment.
We are very satisfied with what they offer, the way they work and the speed of payment. On top of that they think along with us actively and are always easy to reach. The contact is pleasant and professional.
We grow seriously every year, but finding suitable finance for a young business turned out to be hard. From the first contact with SOOF: short lines, pointed questions, quick to move. My feeling straight away was that they understand entrepreneurs here.
SOOF responds to the growing capital need in automotive. Vehicles on their way to their final destination are advanced against efficiently, so that we keep enough working capital to keep growing. Short lines, quick decisions, and a relationship that goes further than the transaction.

"The best part is that I can say yes now. A big job is just an opportunity again. I know my working capital moves with me, so I no longer have to work out whether I will make it until the client pays."
"And there is another side to it I had not thought of beforehand: I no longer have to make awkward phone calls to clients about unpaid invoices. SOOF does that, properly and professionally. That is better for the relationship with my clients."
"For me it comes down to reliability. In all those years nothing has ever gone wrong. And if there is a question, it is a matter of one phone call."
Frequently asked questions
SOOF works with SMEs. Factoring at SOOF is not available to sole traders or one-person businesses.
Yes. We go through what your project invoicing looks like and match the advance to it. In construction and infrastructure in particular, that is the normal way of things.
SOOF works exclusively with traditional factoring on your full receivables book. That is also what makes the growing line possible: more turnover automatically means more working capital, without renegotiating.
Then SOOF takes over that pledge and coordinates the process with your bank. For many SMEs that is the point at which alternative finance becomes possible after all. How that works is set out in what is a pledge.
The situations in our cases come from our own practice. We publish them anonymised: names, companies, amounts and other details have been changed, so that a case cannot be traced back to an individual client. Working capital is client data, and we keep that confidential. A case describes one situation and says nothing about the outcome in your case.
